Houthi Forces Advance Within 50 Miles of Aden, Threatening Key Supply Routes

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has advanced to within 80 kilometers (50 miles) of Aden, the temporary capital and main stronghold of the internationally recognized government, according to four military sources cited by Reuters on Monday. The rapid push brings the conflict dangerously close to the seat of the Saudi-backed government and signals a major escalation in the years-long war. Fighting was reported throughout Monday at a military camp at the entrance to Tur al-Bahah district, one of the main approaches to Aden, as Houthi and government forces clashed for control of strategic positions.

The advance threatens the main road linking Aden with the besieged city of Taiz, a vital artery for southwestern Yemen. Control of this route is crucial for the movement of goods and people, and its disruption could further isolate Taiz and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. The Houthi push is part of a broader offensive that began in September, when the rebels swept down Yemen’s Red Sea coast and seized territory along the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping lanes and a key route for Saudi oil exports to Asia. The violence has shattered a 2022 UN-brokered truce that had largely halted major attacks in a war that began in 2014, when the Houthis drove the government from Sanaa.

In Al-Jawf province, control remains split, with the Houthis holding al-Hazm and surrounding districts while government forces retain most of the province’s desert expanse. The Houthi advance within 50 miles of Aden marks a significant shift in the conflict’s front lines and raises concerns about the government’s ability to defend its temporary capital. The offensive also poses a threat to international shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a chokepoint for global trade. The renewed fighting underscores the fragility of the ceasefire and the difficulty of achieving a lasting political settlement.

The international community has expressed alarm over the escalation, with the United Nations warning of a worsening humanitarian situation. The Houthi push toward Aden could trigger a new wave of displacement and further strain already limited resources. As the conflict intensifies, the prospects for peace in Yemen appear increasingly distant, and
