Deadly Strike on Ukrainian Aid Site Kills 31 as War Escalates Before Peace Talks

A Russian strike on a humanitarian aid distribution point in the village of Komyshuvakha has killed at least 31 people, with more than 45 residents still missing, according to local officials. The site, which served as a shelter and weekly distribution point for aid packages every Monday, was hit as residents gathered to collect supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russians could not have been unaware that civilians remained in the village and gathered each week for humanitarian aid, calling the attack a deliberate targeting of civilians.

The strike comes amid a broader escalation of hostilities. Overnight into Tuesday, Russian forces launched a barrage of 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, in what officials described as the largest aerial attack of the war so far. The assault killed at least 12 people and injured dozens more, including three children in the northern region of Zhytomyr. The wave of strikes targeted power plants across the country, damaged hospitals, and wounded scores of people, further straining Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

Despite the violence, diplomatic efforts are underway. The attack occurred just before -brokered peace negotiations scheduled for next week, more than 4 1/2 years after Russia’s all-out invasion. This would be the most significant truce between Kyiv and Moscow since 2022. Zelenskyy outlined Ukraine’s priorities for the talks: halting strikes on energy and critical infrastructure, unblocking Black Sea grain shipments, and expanding prisoner exchanges. He expressed hope that these discussions and other diplomatic efforts would pave the way for trilateral talks among the countries’ leaders, which he said are needed to resolve key issues.

The strike on the aid site has drawn international condemnation and raised concerns about the prospects for peace. As rescue operations continue in Komyshuvakha, the toll is expected to rise. The attack underscores the devastating impact of the war on civilians and the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities. With peace talks on the horizon, the coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomacy can prevail over further bloodshed.
