DVLA Bans 76 Number Plates: What UK Drivers Need to Know for 2026
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has announced a record number of banned number plates for the upcoming 2026 registration changes. While the vast majority of the 76 plates will be available, over 400 combinations have been withheld due to offensive language, political references, or potential to impersonate emergency services. This marks a significant rise compared to previous years, reflecting the DVLA’s commitment to maintaining decency and public safety on UK roads.
According to a DVLA spokesperson, “The vast majority of registration numbers are made available, but DVLA withholds any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment, or are in poor taste.” The banned plates include those that spell out inappropriate words when read with the age identifier (e.g., using 0 for O or 1 for I), reference recent cultural events or conflicts, or are offensive in languages other than English. For instance, a combination that might have been acceptable five years ago could now be banned if it inadvertently references a recent controversy.
Despite the bans, the DVLA emphasizes that the total number of potential combinations runs into the hundreds of thousands, so most personalised plates remain available. In many cases, a close alternative can achieve the same personalisation without the problematic element. For example, if a specific letter sequence is banned, a slight variation often works. This ensures that drivers can still create a unique plate while adhering to regulations.
Key dates for 2026: The ’26’ plates go on sale on 1 March 2026, and the ’76’ plates will follow in September. Drivers interested in personalised registrations should check the DVLA’s official website for the full list of banned combinations before making a purchase. Custom registrations remain extremely popular, and the DVLA continues to run official online auctions and direct sales, generating millions each year for the UK Treasury.
