Chelsea Thrash Western Sydney Wanderers in 10-Goal Pre-Season Thriller
Chelsea kicked off their pre-season tour in spectacular fashion, defeating Western Sydney Wanderers 7-3 in a pulsating friendly at the Accor Stadium in Sydney. The match, which marked Xabi Alonso’s first game in charge of the Blues, was a goal-fest that saw the Premier League side come from behind three times before running away with the contest in a breathtaking second-half spell.
The Wanderers stunned Chelsea early on, taking the lead through a well-worked move that exposed the Blues’ makeshift defense. With key stars like Morgan Rogers and new signings Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda missing—the former due to post-World Cup rest, the latter through injury—Alonso fielded a mix of youth and experience. Tosin Adarabioyo, who started in central defense, came close to scoring from a corner but saw his close-range header saved. Meanwhile, Liam Delap forced a fine stop from Wanderers goalkeeper Holmes before the break, but Chelsea trailed 2-1 at halftime.
The second half descended into chaos as Western Sydney Wanderers twice regained the lead, only for Chelsea to equalize each time. The turning point came when Joao Pedro produced a stunning nine-minute hat-trick, scoring three goals in quick succession to turn the game on its head. The Brazilian’s clinical finishing, combined with the Wanderers’ defensive lapses, saw Chelsea net five unanswered goals to seal a 7-3 victory. The performance highlighted the attacking depth Alonso has at his disposal, even without several first-team regulars.
While the scoreline was emphatic, Alonso will be concerned by his side’s defensive fragility, particularly against a team from the A-League. The Blues struggled to cope with the physicality and directness of the Wanderers, a recurring issue that plagued them last season. However, the match served its purpose as a fitness-building exercise, and the attacking fluidity—especially the link-up play between Pedro and the wide players—offered plenty of encouragement. Chelsea continue their pre-season tour with more friendlies in the coming days as they fine-tune their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.
