Rangers’ European Hopes Hang in the Balance After Defensive Lapses in Poland
Rangers face an uphill battle to progress in the Europa League third qualifying round after a disappointing 2-1 first-leg defeat to Jagiellonia Białystok in Poland. The Scottish side started brightly, taking an early lead when Tuur Rommens’ low cross deflected off home defender Guilherme Montoia and into the net. However, their joy was short-lived as defensive errors allowed Kajetan Szmyt to score twice in the first half, turning the tie on its head.
The match, played at the Chorten Arena, highlighted Rangers’ ongoing fragility at the back. Despite a dream start, Derek McInnes’ side failed to maintain control, and Szmyt punished their sloppiness with a clinical double. The visitors improved after the break, much like their recent performance at Tannadice, but they couldn’t find the crucial equaliser. Substitute Findlay Curtis came closest, striking the post late on, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a draw.
One positive for Rangers was the return of Nico Raskin, who came on at half-time to inject energy into midfield. However, his future remains uncertain, with clubs circling after his impressive World Cup showing. The Belgian’s performance will be closely watched, but his potential departure could further weaken a squad already under pressure.
Rangers now face a daunting task in the second leg at Ibrox, needing to overturn the deficit. The team must address their defensive vulnerabilities and show greater composure if they are to keep their European campaign alive. With the tie finely poised, the Scottish giants will need a much-improved display to progress.
