Netanyahu’s Defiant UN Speech Met with Mass Walkout as Domestic Pressures Mount

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, but his speech was overshadowed by a mass walkout of delegates protesting Israel’s wartime policies. As Netanyahu approached the podium, dozens of representatives from Arab and Muslim-majority countries, along with nations such as Colombia and South Africa, rose and exited the assembly hall in a show of support for Palestine. Those who remained, including members of the Israeli delegation, applauded and cheered as he began speaking.

The walkout underscored the deep divisions over Israel’s actions, but Netanyahu’s speech was also aimed at a domestic audience, coming just a month before critical parliamentary elections that could unseat him. He used the platform to defend Israel’s military campaign and attack its critics, framing the conflict as a battle between civilization and tyranny. Closing his speech, Netanyahu addressed the remaining delegates as one, maintaining: “Over the centuries, the tyrannies that tried to destroy us failed time and again.” His appearance became both a defense of Israel’s wartime policies and a focal point for opposition from governments and protesters critical of those policies.

The walkout was not the only disruption during the day’s proceedings. Outside the UN, NYC police arrested actress Susan Sarandon and other celebrities protesting Netanyahu’s visit. The day’s events also included discussions on artificial intelligence, critical minerals competition, and human rights concerns, though few breakthroughs were expected. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi confirmed he would remain in New York through the weekend, though he did not disclose his agenda. When asked about consensus between the Trump administration and Gulf Cooperation Council leaders on Iran, Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack did not provide a clear answer.

In a separate development, a Chinese official criticized unilateral and protectionist measures such as tariff hikes, blaming them for the current global economic doldrums. The convergence of crises, chaos, and walkouts dominated the third day of the UN General Assembly, highlighting the stark divisions within the international community. As Netanyahu fights for his political survival at home, his UN appearance served as a stark reminder of the challenges Israel faces on the world stage.
