National Coffee Day 2024: America’s Coffee Obsession Reaches New Heights

Post

As the United States celebrates National Coffee Day, recent data reveals that coffee remains America’s favorite beverage, consumed by more adults daily than any other drink, including water. According to the National Coffee Association (NCA), 83% of past-day coffee drinkers enjoy their coffee at home, while out-of-home consumption has surged to 38%—the highest level since January 2020. This resurgence in café visits and drive-thru orders signals a robust recovery for coffee retailers, with 55% of past-week out-of-home coffee buyers using drive-thrus and a record 40% ordering via apps. The convenience of mobile ordering and drive-thru pickups has become a staple of the modern coffee experience.

Espresso-based beverages are driving specialty coffee’s popularity like never before. A record-high 47% of American adults had an espresso-based drink in the past week, up 17% from previous years. Lattes, cappuccinos, and caffè mochas are no longer niche indulgences but everyday staples for millions. This shift is reflected in the retail landscape: grocery stores remain the leading channel for coffee purchases but have fallen to 35% from 42% in January, while mass merchandisers climbed to 28% from 23%. The data underscores a dynamic market where convenience and quality intersect.

Amid this coffee boom, certain brands are earning national recognition. TastingTable recently named Dunn Brothers Coffee the #1 Cold Brew in America, and Insider Monkey recognized it as a 2024 “Top Five Highest Quality Coffee Chain in the U.S.” Such accolades highlight the growing demand for premium coffee experiences. Whether brewed at home, ordered at a drive-thru, or enjoyed in a favorite espresso-based drink, coffee continues to evolve while remaining an essential part of millions of Americans’ daily routines. As we raise our mugs this National Coffee Day, it’s clear that America’s love affair with coffee is stronger than ever.
