Fortnite’s Rocket Racing Mode to Shut Down in October 2026, But Its Legacy Lives On

Post

Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite’s Rocket Racing mode will be removed in October 2026, marking a significant loss for players on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The mode, which blended classic racing concepts with Rocket League-style mechanics, proved to be more than just a distraction from Fortnite’s chaotic battle royale action. According to Epic’s support article, the mode is still playable until its scheduled removal, but its dedicated quests and UEFN track-creation template were already pulled in the week of March 30, 2026. UEFN islands built from Rocket Racing templates will also be removed alongside the mode.

The closure comes amid a broader restructuring at Epic Games. The company cited a downturn in Fortnite engagement starting in 2025, stating, “we’re spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded.” This context is particularly poignant given Epic’s acquisitions of Rocket League maker Psyonix in 2019 and rhythm game veteran Harmonix in 2021. While Rocket Racing’s cars will remain usable and some racing tools are being folded into UEFN for creators, the mode itself will vanish. Notably, Fortnite Festival is not ending entirely: only its Battle Stage closed on April 16, 2026 (v40.20), while Main Stage and Jam Stage remain live. Epic’s support article is unambiguous: Festival “is not coming to an end.”

For players, the removal of Rocket Racing represents the loss of a unique hybrid experience that combined high-speed racing with Fortnite’s signature style. The mode’s shutdown is part of a larger trend of cutbacks, but its influence will persist through UEFN. As the October 2026 deadline approaches, fans can still enjoy the mode while it lasts, and creators can continue to use its assets in new ways. Epic’s decision underscores the challenges facing live-service games, but also the enduring appeal of Fortnite’s ecosystem.
