Emonnie Branch Denied Bond in Killing of Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips

A Tennessee man accused of fatally shooting a Kentucky State Police trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 was denied bond Tuesday in Warren County court. Emonnie Branch, 51, of Portland, Tennessee, faces a charge of murder of a first responder in the death of Trooper Hayden Phillips, a husband and father of three young boys. The judge sided with prosecutors who argued Branch is a flight risk and a danger to the community.

Branch was already entangled in the legal system before the deadly encounter. He was on probation in Tennessee and was wanted for a probation violation, with a criminal record that included assault, fraud, and illegal gun possession. The shooting unfolded after Kentucky State Police issued a statewide Blue Alert, notifying the public that an officer had been attacked and to be on the lookout for a bluish-gray Honda Civic. According to LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey, authorities quickly identified Branch as the primary suspect using cell phone location pings and a license plate recognition database maintained by the technology company Flock.

The swift identification led to Branch’s arrest and Tuesday’s court appearance, where he was formally denied bond. The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the risks law enforcement officers face during routine traffic stops and the multi-agency coordination that followed the shooting. Trooper Phillips, a Kentucky State Police veteran, was remembered as a dedicated public servant and family man. Branch remains in custody as the case moves forward.
