DeVonta Smith’s Training Camp Absence Raises Concerns as Eagles Prepare for Bears

Post

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith has been sidelined for nearly a week and will remain out to begin the third week of training camp, according to recent reports. The absence is a significant blow for the Eagles as first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion works to install his system and ensure key players—including Smith and rookie wideout Lemon—are fully acclimated before the regular season. Smith’s extended time on the sidelines could hinder his chemistry with quarterback Jalen Hurts and delay his grasp of the new offense.

Smith’s absence comes on the heels of a modest season opener in which he caught three of six targets for 53 yards in a 24-22 Week 1 victory over the Washington Commanders. While he made a spectacular 31-yard grab on a beautiful third-down throw from Hurts late in the third quarter to set up a field goal, he was otherwise held in check. He finished behind tight end Dallas Goedert (77 yards) and fellow wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (73 yards) in receiving yards, raising questions about his role in the early going.

Meanwhile, the Eagles’ backfield is also taking shape. With Jonathon Brooks (groin) landing on injured reserve, Dillon will step into the main backup role for Week 3. However, there is no real timeshare—Hubbard will remain the primary back. For fantasy managers relying on Bowers, contingency plans are already a familiar necessity, and that will continue to be the case for Week 3.

As the Eagles prepare for their upcoming game against the Bears, Smith’s status is one to monitor closely. His return to practice will be crucial for both his individual preparation and the team’s offensive cohesion. Stay tuned for further updates on his progress.
