DeMar DeRozan’s New Chapter: Nuggets Sign Veteran Forward
In a significant move that has reshaped the Denver Nuggets’ roster, veteran forward DeMar DeRozan has agreed to a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the team, according to league sources. The signing comes just a day after the Nuggets completed a multi-team trade that sent restricted free-agent forward Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers. DeRozan, a six-time All-Star, is expected to assume a significant role in Denver, though his usage may decrease while playing alongside stars Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. The question remains whether he will unseat either Christian Braun or Cameron Johnson for a starting position in the 2026-27 season.
DeRozan’s arrival in Denver was facilitated by prior relationships with key figures, including Aaron Gordon and assistant coach Jared Dudley, who spoke with him in recent weeks. The Nuggets were among several teams linked to DeRozan during the free agency period, with the Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, and Detroit Pistons also showing interest. However, Denver ultimately secured his services, adding a seasoned scorer who has remained durable into his late 30s. This move signals the Nuggets’ intent to bolster their championship aspirations, even as they part ways with the promising young Watson.
DeRozan’s basketball pedigree is well-documented, but his impact extends beyond the NBA. During the PAC-10 tournament, he put on a clinic, earning MVP honors after scoring 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Arizona State in the finale. Off the court, DeRozan remains actively involved with his former schools, contributing to improving conditions for the Compton basketball team, which recently underwent a complete reconstruction of its facilities in 2025. His commitment to community and player development underscores his leadership both on and off the hardwood.
As DeRozan embarks on this new chapter with the Nuggets, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how he integrates into Denver’s system. While his role may be reduced compared to his previous stops, his experience and scoring ability could prove invaluable in high-pressure playoff situations. The Nuggets, who have been a perennial contender, are clearly aiming to maximize their championship window, and DeRozan’s addition adds another weapon to their arsenal. With the
