NSW Premier Chris Minns has reaffirmed his commitment to preserving cultural traditions in Australia, declaring that the country does not need to become a “monoculture.” Speaking at the Canterbury-Bankstown Children’s Festival in Sydney, Minns told families that Australians can maintain strong connections to their heritage while sharing a unified commitment to the nation. “We believe they’re hugely important for our future and we think that they’re proud Aussies who love our country,” he said, emphasizing the value of cultural diversity. The Premier noted it was particularly encouraging to see younger generations embracing their heritage, and he stressed that children remain at the heart of the festival’s mission. “Most importantly, this festival is for our children,” he added.
In addition to celebrating multiculturalism, Minns addressed a protest outside the event, underscoring the importance of democratic participation. “I think civic engagement is a really important part of democratic life in Australia,” he remarked. “It is really important people have a say, protest the premier, protest what the government is pursuing and what they want to change.” His comments reflect a broader commitment to upholding free speech and public involvement in political discourse, even when it involves criticism of his own administration.
The Premier also touched on urban development, signaling a balanced approach to housing and infrastructure. “I’m not proposing to put high rise on beaches or destroy amenities but where there is public transport, where its close to the city, where you can realistically live and it still remains beautiful we have got to explore those options,” he explained. This stance comes amid ongoing debates over housing density and affordability in NSW. Meanwhile, separate concerns have emerged regarding youth crime, with an expert rallying against ‘adult crime, adult time’ laws as teens are increasingly recruited for gangland activities. Minns’s address highlights his administration’s focus on social cohesion, democratic engagement, and sustainable growth, reinforcing his vision for a united and inclusive New South Wales.
