His wife, Alma Viator, announced his death on Sunday afternoon via a Facebook post, revealing that he died from a heart attack. “I lost the love of my life today,” she wrote, marking the end of a remarkable life that spanned acting, politics, and a lasting connection with fans.
Jones’s journey in entertainment began with television commercials and small film roles, including appearances in Together For Days, Smokey and the Bandit, and The Lincoln Conspiracy. However, his breakthrough came with the independent film The Moonrunners, directed by Gy Waldron and starring Waylon Jennings. This film served as a precursor to The Dukes of Hazzard, and when the series launched in 1979, Jones was cast as the beloved Cooter. After Dukes ended, Jones transitioned into politics, serving as a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia’s 4th district from 1989 to 1993.
