Skydivers Turn Heroes: Wisconsin Plane Crash Survivors Saved by Quick-Thinking Paramedics

Post

When a single-engine plane crashed into a cornfield near East Troy, Wisconsin, on Sunday afternoon, a group of experienced skydivers who witnessed the accident didn’t hesitate to act. The skydivers, aboard a Skydive Milwaukee aircraft preparing for a routine afternoon of jumps, saw the plane go down and quickly sprang into action. Using their training as paramedics, they treated a seriously injured victim before ground-based rescue crews arrived, potentially saving a life in the critical moments after impact.

The plane, carrying four people, had just taken off from East Troy Municipal Airport when it went down. John Bechtel, a veteran skydiver with three decades of experience, was among those who watched the aircraft disappear behind trees. “He kind of banked up and then he disappeared behind the trees, and we were all waiting for him to show back up,” Bechtel told WISN. When the plane didn’t reappear, the skydivers knew something was wrong. East Troy Fire and Rescue confirmed that the skydivers were the first to spot the crash and some jumped in to help, parachuting into the field to reach the victims quickly.

Once on the ground, the skydivers’ medical training kicked in. They assessed the scene and provided emergency care to the most seriously injured person until paramedics and firefighters arrived. Their swift response and medical expertise were crucial in stabilizing the victim. “It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” Bechtel said, reflecting on the unexpected turn his Sunday jump took. The four survivors are now recovering, thanks in large part to the skydivers’ heroic efforts.

This incident highlights the remarkable bravery and skill of the skydiving community, who not only witnessed the crash but also used their unique abilities to make a difference. Their quick thinking and paramedic skills turned a potentially tragic situation into a story of survival and hope. As the investigation into the crash continues, the actions of these skydivers serve as a powerful reminder of how training and readiness can save lives in the most unexpected circumstances.
