FBI Launches Counterintelligence Probe into Egyptian Intelligence Ties in Menendez Bribery Case
Already embroiled in an alleged bribery scandal and facing calls from political party allies to resign, New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is now the subject of a separate federal counterintelligence investigation examining what role foreign intelligence agencies might have played in trying to extract information from the senator and his wife, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News.
The FBI is specifically investigating whether Egypt’s intelligence services might have been involved in the alleged bribery scheme described in the indictment of Menendez and his wife, Nadine. The concern centers on whether Egyptian intelligence operatives attempted to gain access to the Democratic senator—who helps oversee billions in U.S. aid to Egypt—through his wife. CBS News has also learned that the FBI is probing whether Egypt’s intelligence services tried to exploit that connection to obtain sensitive information.
This counterintelligence investigation is in addition to the federal corruption case that accuses Menendez of bribery, extortion, and fraud. Both Menendez and his wife pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to the charges. The new inquiry adds a national security dimension to an already explosive political scandal, raising questions about whether a foreign government sought to influence a sitting U.S. senator through illicit means.
The development intensifies pressure on Menendez, who has resisted calls from fellow Democrats to step down. While the corruption case focuses on alleged quid pro quo arrangements, the counterintelligence probe examines whether Egyptian intelligence played a more direct role in the scheme. The FBI’s investigation remains ongoing, and no additional charges have been filed. The senator has denied any wrongdoing.
