Tropical Storm Fay Weakens as It Moves Away from Land, Forecasters Monitor New Atlantic System
Tropical Storm Fay, which approached near-hurricane strength early Monday, is now weakening as it moves away from land in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm formed early Sunday southwest of the Azores, becoming the sixth named storm of the 2020 hurricane season—a season that has been well below average in activity. Forecasters are now turning their attention to a new potential system emerging off the coast of Africa, while also monitoring other developments in the tropics.
Despite the quiet season, which has produced just six tropical storms so far, forecasters had predicted that there might not be any major hurricanes this year, or at most two. However, they are keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Polo, which is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves closer to the coast of southwestern Mexico over the next few days, according to the hurricane center. In Honolulu, weather service forecasters warned that potential tropical development threatens to bring heavy rainfall to eastern portions of Hawaii during the latter half of the week, though uncertainty remains higher than usual at this time.
