Tragic End to Grandfather’s Epic Charity Ride: 82-Year-Old Cyclist Dies After Raising Awareness for MND
In a poignant turn of events, an 82-year-old Australian grandfather has tragically passed away just one day after completing a monumental charity bike ride across the country. Bob Montgomery, who had just finished a grueling 5,300-kilometer journey from Broome in Western Australia to his hometown of Bowral in the NSW Southern Highlands, died unexpectedly on Monday. His family confirmed the news on social media, expressing shock and grief over the sudden loss.
Montgomery, alongside his 18-year-old grandson Tom Malcolm, had been welcomed home on Sunday by dozens of family, friends, and well-wishers, celebrating the completion of what he called “One Last Ride.” The six-week journey was not just a physical feat but a heartfelt fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) NSW, a cause deeply personal to Montgomery. This was his sixth interstate fundraising ride for the organization, and his family noted that he had been “raising vital funds and awareness for a cause that was deeply personal to him.”
The celebration quickly turned to tragedy when Montgomery was rushed to St George Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died. The news has sent ripples through the community, with many expressing their condolences and admiration for his dedication. Chris O’Meara, from MND NSW, paid tribute to Montgomery, saying, “Through that remarkable journey, Bob helped educate communities across Australia about MND and the important work of MND NSW.” O’Meara also highlighted that the funds raised would provide essential equipment, practical support, specialist care, and information services for people living with MND and their families.
Montgomery’s legacy is one of extraordinary determination and compassion. At 82, he undertook a challenge that would daunt many half his age, all to support others battling a devastating disease. His grandson Tom, who accompanied him, has been described as a pillar of support throughout the journey. The family has asked for privacy as they mourn, but their message is clear: Bob’s final ride was a testament to his character, and his impact on MND awareness will not be forgotten.
