TMC Turmoil: Abhishek Banerjee Faces Internal Rebellion and Legal Hurdles
In a significant political development, West Bengal’s opposition leader and rebel MLA Ritabrata Banerjee has formed a new committee within the ‘real TMC’ faction, leading to the suspension of Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s General Secretary. This move, reported on June 22, 2026, follows a secret meeting between Ritabrata and a group of former and current Trinamool councilors in New Town. The internal rift underscores the deepening crisis within the Trinamool Congress, as factions vie for control and direction.
Adding to the turmoil, the party faced a major jolt on June 14, 2026, when around 20 rebel MPs gathered in Delhi to meet Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and other BJP leaders. This meeting, held ahead of a crucial Speaker meeting, signals a potential exodus of lawmakers from the TMC. The disintegrating unity within the party is evident, with reports suggesting that even remaining members are considering leaving. This political instability comes at a critical time for the TMC, which is already grappling with internal dissent and external pressures.
Amidst this political chaos, Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent youth leader and Member of Parliament from Diamond Harbour, has received some legal respite. The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the police to refrain from taking coercive steps against him in three criminal cases until November 30. The court ruled that custodial interrogation is not necessary, but also barred him from traveling abroad without prior permission. This protection offers a temporary shield for Banerjee, who is navigating both legal challenges and political upheaval.
As the TMC faces these multifaceted challenges, the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is being tested. The ongoing factionalism and legal battles highlight the volatile nature of West Bengal’s political landscape.
