Modi and Putin Strengthen India-Russia Ties Ahead of BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi
Ahead of the two-day BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held key bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on deepening cooperation in trade, defence, and industrial sectors. The meeting underscored the enduring Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia, which both leaders agreed to further strengthen despite geopolitical uncertainties. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders shared perspectives on critical regional and global issues, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region that have impacted maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum, PM Modi emphasized the importance of secure sea lanes and open supply routes for global trade. “Global trade can only progress if sea lanes are secure, supply routes remain open and seafarers are safe,” he stated. Putin echoed this sentiment, noting that the most important elements of growth should not be imposed from outside. The two leaders reviewed progress in political, economic, defence, energy, space, skill mobility, and people-to-people domains, reaffirming their commitment to collaborative resilience.
The BRICS 2026 Summit, beginning Saturday, will focus on strengthening collective resilience in areas such as food, energy, health, disaster management, and critical supply chains. PM Modi is also expected to hold key talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stressing that China and India should remain good neighbours and partners that help each other succeed. The summit aims to address shared challenges and foster a more integrated and stable multipolar world.
As India hosts this significant gathering, the bilateral engagements highlight the nation’s proactive role in shaping global governance. The discussions between Modi and Putin not only reinforce bilateral ties but also set a collaborative tone for the BRICS Summit, where leaders will seek to enhance cooperation and build a resilient future for all member nations.
