Swiss Skies Alight: Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight
Tonight, the night sky over Switzerland will deliver one of the year’s most spectacular celestial performances. The Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak, offering stargazers in major cities like Lausanne, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-Les-Bains, Nyon, and parts of Geneva a chance to witness up to 150 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The Swiss Astronomical Society (SAG) notes that clear skies, minimal light pollution, and an unobstructed view are key to maximizing the experience.
This shower is a prelude to the even more famous Perseids, which will grace Swiss skies from July 17 to August 24, 2026, peaking on the night of August 12-13. During that peak, observers can expect a similar dazzling display of up to 150 shooting stars per hour. For enthusiasts, the Geminids are just one of eleven major annual showers that provide regular opportunities to observe these cosmic fireworks, from the Quadrantids in January to the Ursids in December, alongside dozens of minor streams that dedicated trackers follow.
To make the most of tonight’s show, find a dark spot away from city lights, give your eyes time to adapt, and look toward the constellation Gemini, where the meteors appear to radiate from.
