GTA Braces for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds: Special Weather Statement in Effect
Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are under a special weather statement as Environment Canada warns of a potent mix of heavy rain and strong winds. The statement, issued Sunday, covers a wide swath of the region, including Halton, Peel, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Oshawa, Southern Durham Region, Hamilton, and Niagara. Residents should prepare for repeated showers and thunderstorms that could bring 50 to 80 mm of rain, leading to ponding on roads and potential localized flooding.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has also issued a flood outlook that remains in effect until noon Monday. With river water levels already elevated, any significant rainfall could push them above normal. The ground is already saturated from recent precipitation, particularly in areas like Sudbury, which saw heavy rain on Friday and overnight into Saturday. This high atmospheric moisture means storms can drop significant rain quickly, increasing the risk of flash flooding and water pooling on roadways.
In addition to the rain, strong southwest winds are expected to begin Monday afternoon and last through Tuesday morning. These winds could cause further hazards, such as downed tree limbs and power outages. Environment Canada advises residents to secure loose objects and stay updated on local forecasts. While the GTA is under the special statement, Cottage Country remains under yellow rainfall warnings, indicating a continued threat of heavy precipitation in those areas.
Authorities urge everyone to exercise caution when traveling, avoid flooded areas, and never drive through standing water. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds can create dangerous conditions, so it’s essential to stay informed and heed any warnings or advisories. As the system moves through, conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday, but until then, residents should remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions.
