Danger Dan Opens Up About Rare Eye Disease in New Song
German singer and rapper Danger Dan, known for his politically charged lyrics and recent public broadcasting controversy, has revealed a deeply personal struggle in his latest release. In his new song, “Dass es hier so schön ist,” the artist, whose real name is Daniel Pongratz, publicly addresses his battle with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare degenerative eye disease that gradually leads to blindness.
In a heartfelt newsletter accompanying the song’s release, Pongratz shared his diagnosis, which he has lived with for about 20 years. “I suffer from the rare eye disease retinitis pigmentosa, which gradually causes me to lose my eyesight,” he wrote. The progression of the disease is unpredictable, but despite his severely restricted field of vision, he remains hopeful, stating he has a good chance of “still being able to see enough for a few years to find the piano keys.” This resilience is reflected in the song’s opening lines: “I still see it all before me, hear the doctor telling me: You will go blind from this disease.”
The song’s title, “Dass es hier so schön ist” (That it’s so beautiful here), takes on a poignant meaning as Danger Dan grapples with the fading beauty of the world around him. His decision to go public with his condition is a powerful act of vulnerability, shedding light on a rare disease that affects only a small percentage of the population.
