Coles Launches Nationwide Food Relief Appeal Amidst Rising Cost-of-Living Crisis
In response to the escalating cost-of-living pressures facing Australians, Coles has announced a nationwide food relief appeal. This initiative builds on the supermarket giant’s existing food rescue program, which has already provided the equivalent of 377 million meals by donating unsold, edible food to charities across the country. The appeal aims to further support those in need, as new research reveals a concerning financial picture for many households.
According to Coles’ recent research, 41% of Australians have had to choose between buying food and paying another essential bill in the past six months. Even more alarming, 15% have skipped meals due to rising costs. These statistics underscore the severity of the situation, highlighting that food insecurity is no longer a marginal issue but a mainstream concern affecting millions.
Despite the growing need, many Australians remain hesitant to seek help. The research found that 48% of people would avoid food relief because they believed someone else needed it more, while 32% said they would feel too embarrassed to ask. This stigma is a significant barrier, and Foodbank Australia Chief Executive Kylea Tink emphasized that removing it is just as important as raising funds. “The findings show why it is important to remove the barriers that stop Australians from seeking food relief,” Tink stated.
Coles’ appeal is a timely reminder that food relief is not just about providing meals but also about fostering a community where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, initiatives like this are crucial in ensuring that no Australian has to choose between eating and paying bills. The appeal not only raises much-needed funds but also sparks a conversation about the importance of accessible and stigma-free food support.
