Peskov: Russia Open to Peace Talks, but Goals Remain Priority Amidst Escalating Conflict
In a recent statement that underscores the Kremlin’s stance on the ongoing conflict, spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s openness to peace negotiations with Ukraine, yet emphasized that achieving Moscow’s objectives remains the paramount concern. Speaking on Sunday, Peskov asserted, “The main thing for us is to achieve our goals,” signaling that while dialogue is possible, it must align with Russia’s strategic interests. This comes amidst reports that no date has been set for potential talks, though Istanbul is likely to remain the host city, as per Russian state media.
Peskov’s remarks also shed light on the evolving nature of the conflict, which he described as having escalated from a “special military operation” into “a real war.” He attributed this shift to the involvement of Western countries backing Ukraine, stating, “There is a war going on, this is a real war.” This characterization marks a notable departure from the Kremlin’s earlier framing and reflects the intensifying hostilities on the ground. The statement follows a recent drone strike on the Lukoil-owned NORSI oil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, the fourth-largest in Russia, which was confirmed by the Ukrainian General Staff and left the facility in flames.
Despite the escalating tensions, Peskov indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, he cautioned that without prior preparation, such a meeting would be nothing more than a “PR stunt doomed to failure.” This suggests that while the door for diplomacy is ajar, substantive progress would require significant groundwork and concessions from Kyiv. The Kremlin’s position appears to be that any negotiations must be grounded in realistic expectations and prior agreements, rather than symbolic gestures.
