Putin and Jaishankar Meet in Moscow: Strengthening India-Russia Ties and BRICS Cooperation
In a significant diplomatic engagement, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Kremlin on Monday. The meeting underscored the enduring strength of the India-Russia bilateral relationship, which has remained robust and stable over the years. The leaders discussed ways to further enhance cooperation across key sectors, including trade, energy, and fertilisers, reflecting the deepening partnership between the two nations.
During the talks, Jaishankar highlighted the substantial growth in economic cooperation between India and Russia. “Overall, I think our economic cooperation has grown very significantly,” he stated, emphasizing India’s keen interest in expanding collaboration in these vital areas. The remarks come at a time when fertiliser supplies remain a crucial component of the bilateral economic relationship, with India relying on Russia for essential agricultural inputs.
The meeting also served as a platform for Jaishankar to convey a personal message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Putin, further cementing the high-level diplomatic channels between the two countries. This interaction is particularly noteworthy as it precedes the upcoming BRICS summit, where Russia is set to play a key role. BRICS brings together eleven major emerging markets and developing countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, making it a crucial forum for multilateral cooperation.
The visit comes amid a backdrop of shifting global dynamics, and the reaffirmation of India-Russia ties signals a continued commitment to strategic autonomy and multi-vector foreign policy. As both nations navigate complex international challenges, their partnership remains a cornerstone of regional stability and economic growth. The discussions at the Kremlin are expected to pave the way for more concrete outcomes in trade, energy security, and agricultural cooperation, benefiting both nations and contributing to the broader BRICS agenda.
