Dutch Authorities Thwart Planned Attack on Synagogue Amid Rising Anti-Semitic Incidents
In a significant security operation, Dutch authorities have foiled a planned attack on a synagogue in the town of Heemstede, west of Amsterdam, after discovering explosive materials near the building. The European Jewish Congress (EJC) reported the incident on Sunday, highlighting the growing threat facing Jewish communities in the Netherlands. The EJC stated on X: “The discovery of explosive materials near a place of worship is extremely alarming and highlights the serious and ongoing threat facing Jewish communities.” The foiled attack comes as part of a concerning wave of anti-Semitic incidents in the country.
Earlier on Saturday, an explosion damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam, which the city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, described as “a deliberate attack against the Jewish community.” The blast occurred in a residential neighborhood on the south side of the city, causing limited damage, with police and firefighters responding promptly. In a separate incident, two teenagers were detained after suspicious behavior near a Jewish institution west of Amsterdam. Authorities discovered suspected explosive materials near a Chabad House, and early surveillance likely prevented an attack. Dutch police confirmed that the incident in Heemstede occurred at around 1:15 a.m., with the teenagers’ arrest thwarting a potential tragedy.
These incidents underscore the escalating security concerns for Jewish institutions across Europe. The EJC’s warning highlights the urgent need for heightened vigilance and protective measures. The quick action by Dutch law enforcement, aided by surveillance and community alertness, has been crucial in preventing what could have been a devastating attack.
