Schwägalp: Cycling, Cable Car Renovation, and Alpine Views in 2026
The Schwägalp, a mountain pass in eastern Switzerland, is set to be in the spotlight in 2026. The Tour de Suisse men’s race will pass through the Obertoggenburg region on Friday, bringing professional cyclists to the area. As a result, roads will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of the riders and spectators. This event highlights the Schwägalp’s significance as a challenging and scenic route for cycling enthusiasts.
In addition to the cycling event, the Säntis cable car, which connects the Schwägalp to the summit of Säntis, will undergo major renovation work. The cable car will be out of service from May 1st until late autumn 2026. Despite this, the hotel and restaurant facilities on the Schwägalp remain open, welcoming visitors who wish to enjoy the alpine atmosphere. The construction work is progressing well, with the first workers already quartered at the mountain station, indicating that the project is on track.
The Schwägalp itself is a notable pass at an elevation of 1,278 meters, offering breathtaking views that stretch across six countries and Lake Constance. This makes it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The renovation of the cable car is a significant undertaking that will enhance the experience for future visitors, ensuring safe and efficient access to the Säntis summit.
While the cable car is out of service, visitors can still reach the Schwägalp by road and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. The area is also a hub for hiking and other outdoor activities.
