Hydrologist Manuela Brunner from the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) describes the precipitation as merely ‘a drop in the ocean,’ highlighting the persistent nature of the crisis. The country is heading into summer with unusually low water reserves, raising concerns for agriculture, ecosystems, and water supply.

The primary drivers of this drought are the extremely dry months of April and May and a very thin snowpack in the Alps. Snow plays a critical role in Switzerland’s water cycle, acting as a natural reservoir. From autumn to spring, mountain precipitation falls as snow, which then melts during warmer months, feeding rivers and groundwater. This year, the lack of snow means less meltwater, exacerbating the dry conditions. As Brunner notes, the snowpack’s influence on discharge dynamics is significant, both locally and downstream.

Groundwater resources are particularly vulnerable. Those primarily fed by precipitation are more sensitive to dry periods than those supplemented by rivers or lakes. With reduced rainfall and snowmelt, these aquifers are not being replenished, leading to potential shortages. The situation underscores the delicate balance of Switzerland’s water systems and the cascading effects of climate variability.

While the recent rain provided temporary relief, it is insufficient to offset the deficit. Brunner suggests that simple measures can help prevent critical situations, such as water conservation and efficient irrigation practices. As the summer progresses, authorities and residents must remain vigilant.
