In a surprising twist to the ongoing debate over a triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., former President Donald Trump has proposed adding military facilities to the controversial structure. The arch, which would stand 250 feet tall, is intended to address the fact that the U.S. capital is the “only major Western capital without a monumental arch.” However, Trump’s latest plan, announced on Truth Social, would transform the arch into a “top grade military complex” complete with drone and ammunition storage and customized sniper facilities on the roof and plaza. According to Trump, the addition comes at the “strong request” of the U.S. military, marking a significant expansion of the project’s scope.

Trump stated that the 250-foot structure would be able to “house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage.” This drone-and-sniper mission represents a notable escalation from the original concept of a purely commemorative arch. The plan has raised eyebrows among defense analysts, with some questioning the necessity of such facilities given the proximity of existing military installations. As one analyst, Cancian, noted, “There is this military facility long-established with a variety of military capabilities one mile away.” This suggests that the proposed military additions may be redundant, yet Trump insists they are essential.
