Palos Fire Rages in La Habra Heights: Homes Destroyed as Firefighters Battle Blaze
A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Palos Fire, tore through a Southern California neighborhood on Monday afternoon, destroying at least one home and damaging others in La Habra Heights. The blaze erupted near 2400 Las Palomas Drive and quickly raced up a steep hillside toward homes on Casolera Drive, catching residents off guard. Dramatic video showed a home engulfed in flames as firefighters worked desperately to save what they could. By Monday evening, forward progress had been stopped, but not before the fire had burned at least three other structures and consumed 12 acres.
The Palos Fire overwhelmed residents as hundreds of firefighters battled the flames from the ground and air. Live firefighting aircraft, including tankers, helicopters, and reconnaissance planes, were deployed to support ground crews. An advisory remains in place for an area roughly bounded by Las Palomas Drive on the west and West Skyline Drive on the east. The fire’s rapid spread up the hillside underscored the dangerous conditions that have fueled numerous wildfires across the region.
As of Monday evening, the forward progress of the Palos Fire had been halted, but not before it left a trail of destruction. The blaze destroyed two homes and damaged another, according to early reports. Fire officials continue to monitor the situation, and evacuation advisories may remain in effect as crews work to fully contain the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
