Typhoon Bavi Threatens Okinawa: Japan Braces for Severe Weather
Japan is on high alert as Typhoon Bavi bears down on the southern prefecture of Okinawa, bringing with it the threat of extremely strong winds and heavy rainfall. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued warnings for the region, with the storm expected to wallop the area from Friday afternoon. Residents are urged to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions, including landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the JMA, Typhoon Bavi is currently moving northwest, and its impact is anticipated to be significant. On July 26, Okinawa’s main island is expected to experience heavy rain, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain vigilant. The southern part of Kyushu and the Amami region are also in the storm’s path, with forecasts of extremely heavy rain and thunderstorms through late on July 26. These areas could see significant precipitation, raising concerns about localized flooding and mudslides.
While Typhoon Bavi poses a serious threat to Okinawa and surrounding areas, the JMA notes that another system, designated as 9, is moving north near the Mariana Islands. However, this system is not expected to have a major impact on Japan’s main islands. The primary focus remains on Bavi, which is expected to maintain its strength as it approaches the Izu island chain through October. The JMA’s tracking maps provide detailed information on the storm’s projected path, with markers indicating forecast periods and probability circles showing the likely center location with 70% confidence.
