Summer Travel Chaos in Germany: What to Expect This Weekend
As the summer holidays begin in nine German federal states this weekend, travelers should brace for significant congestion on the roads. The ADAC and other traffic authorities are predicting a first major travel wave, with the A70 near Bamberg already experiencing early morning delays. On Saturday, August 8, at 6 a.m., there were reports of heavy traffic on the A70 towards Schweinfurt/Werneck between Bamberg and the Mainbrücke Oberhaid. This is just a taste of what’s to come as holidaymakers head south and north.
The situation is exacerbated by numerous construction sites and closures. Notably, an autobahn tunnel towards the North Sea is closed during the summer holidays, which will cause long queues for those heading to the coast. Additionally, the A9 is expected to become a bottleneck, and roads around Berlin will see heavy traffic. The ADAC warns that the roads will become even more crowded as the day progresses. For those planning to travel to Italy, the Brenner route is particularly problematic, with a demonstration blocking a key route, forcing drivers to seek alternative paths to reach the Gardasee.
Beyond road congestion, travelers should also be aware of other disruptions. Grenzkontrollen (border controls) are in place, and the Bundespolizei are vigilant, so ensure all documents are in order. Rail travelers are not exempt either, as overhead line problems have led to delays and cancellations in long-distance services. Meanwhile, for those opting for water-based recreation, authorities remind that drinking alcohol while on an air mattress or boat is subject to strict rules, and being intoxicated can lead to fines.
To avoid the worst of the traffic, experts recommend traveling early in the morning or late in the evening, and using navigation apps to find alternative routes. Patience and careful planning are essential this weekend.
