Russia’s Growing Influence in Germany: Cyber Threats, Hybrid Warfare, and Extremist Ties
Recent developments highlight escalating tensions between Russia and Germany, with cybersecurity and hybrid warfare at the forefront. Germany’s Criminal Police Office has significantly expanded its capabilities to combat cyberattacks, according to official statements. This move comes amid rising concerns over Russian-backed cyber operations targeting critical infrastructure. Military strategist and Colonel Sönke Marahrens emphasized that hybrid warfare must be accepted as a challenge for society as a whole to ensure Germany remains resilient against these attacks. These hybrid tactics often involve low-cost, deniable operations such as recruiting individuals via social media to photograph military sites, commit arson, or spray graffiti, blurring the lines between criminal activity and state-sponsored sabotage.
