Matt Damon is opening up about a frightening health scare that hit close to home. In a new cover interview with GQ, published Thursday, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that his wife of nearly 21 years, Luciana “Lucy” Barroso, underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm just one week before the 2024 Academy Awards. “We had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm,” Damon, 56, told the magazine. Despite the gravity of the situation, the couple managed to step out for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party on March 10, 2024, with Luciana by his side. “She’s totally fine, thank God,” Damon assured, adding that it was the first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back. “She surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the after-party,” he recalled. “It was pretty f***ing heroic of her to do that and really meaningful.”

The couple skipped the main ceremony but attended the after-party, partly because Luciana felt guilty about missing the Oscars years earlier when “The Departed” won Best Picture. Damon explained that they had a two-week rule about being apart, but he broke it for the first time to film Christopher Nolan’s epic “The Odyssey.” The summer blockbuster is already generating major Oscars buzz, and the couple is gearing up for another awards season. “She’s totally fine, thank God,” Damon reiterated, expressing relief and gratitude.

Damon and Luciana married in 2005 and share four daughters: Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 18, and Stella, 15. The actor’s revelation offers a rare glimpse into their private life and the strength of their bond. As Damon prepares for what could be another triumphant awards season, his wife’s health and resilience remain at the forefront. The full interview, “Matt Damon on the Oscars, Tarantino, and the Roles that Got Away” by Frazier Tharpe, is featured in GQ’s Men of the Year issue.
