Jaydon Blue’s Fumble Issues Threaten His Bid for Cowboys’ RB2 Role
The Dallas Cowboys are shaking up their running back depth chart, with second-year back Jaydon Blue emerging as the projected backup to starter Rico Dowdle. However, Blue’s path to securing the RB2 job is not without obstacles, as a recurring fumbling problem has raised concerns among the coaching staff. Despite his impressive performance in Saturday’s preseason game, where he showcased his versatility as both a runner and receiver, Blue’s ball security issues could ultimately cost him the role.
Blue, a 2025 fifth-round pick out of Texas, has been competing with fellow backs Malik Davis and Phil Mafah for the backup spot. While Blue’s athleticism and playmaking ability have stood out, his tendency to put the ball on the ground has been a glaring weakness. In Saturday’s contest, Blue fumbled once, nearly costing the Cowboys possession. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the issue, stating that ball security is a ‘non-negotiable’ for running backs, and that Blue must improve in this area to earn the trust of the coaching staff.
The competition remains tight, with Davis and Mafah also making strong cases. Mafah, however, suffered a chest injury during Saturday’s game, though Schottenheimer indicated it is not expected to sideline him for long. This opens the door for Blue to solidify his position in Friday’s preseason finale against the Saints, but he will need to demonstrate reliable ball handling to fend off his challengers.
Blue’s college career at Texas was marked by explosive plays, including a standout performance in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State, where he scored two touchdowns as a receiver. However, his professional trajectory will depend on his ability to correct his fumbling issues. As the Cowboys finalize their 53-man roster, Blue’s fate hangs in the balance, and his performance in the upcoming game could be the deciding factor in whether he secures the RB2 role or finds himself on the outside looking in.
