Italy on Red Alert: Scorching Heatwave Sweeps Major Cities
Italy is bracing for an unprecedented heatwave as the country’s health ministry places nearly all major cities on the highest ‘red’ alert. With temperatures expected to soar to 41°C in some urban centers, the government has declared a heat emergency, urging residents to take extreme precautions. The latest bulletin reveals that by Monday, 25 of the country’s 27 major cities will be under the red alert, signaling a threat to the entire population, not just vulnerable groups.
The extreme conditions stem from a high-pressure system that has pushed African air masses deep into the Mediterranean basin. Coastal areas, particularly along the Ligurian coast, are experiencing high humidity, which amplifies the perceived temperature, making it feel even hotter. This has led to a surge in hospital visits related to heat-related illnesses, with emergency departments under significant strain. The health ministry has activated emergency protocols, and the Civil Protection Department is on high alert as this marks the third major heatwave of 2026.
In response, authorities have implemented unprecedented measures. Calabria has banned outdoor labor during peak heat hours, and similar restrictions may be expanded regionally. Companies are now authorized to halt outdoor operations during the hottest part of the day, with access to government compensation. This represents a significant expansion of labor protections tied directly to climate conditions. The ministry has also established daily heat-risk bulletins for 27 cities, with color-coded warnings; red alerts indicate severe danger, especially for the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
As Italy swelters, health officials are urging everyone to stay indoors during peak heat, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid direct sunlight. The situation is a stark reminder of the escalating impacts of climate change, with record-breaking temperatures becoming the new norm. With the heatwave expected to persist through the week, the nation remains on high alert, and residents are advised to monitor official updates and follow safety guidelines to mitigate the risks.
