Hurricane Isaias Slams Florida’s Gulf Coast, Leaving Over 800,000 Without Power
Hurricane Isaias made landfall as a Category 2 storm, shredding homes, uprooting trees, and causing significant flooding along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The powerful hurricane knocked out electricity to more than 800,000 customers at its peak, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker. As of early Sunday, more than 140,000 homes and businesses remained without power in Florida, while in Alabama, around 20,000 customers were still in the dark. The storm’s impact was felt across the region, with multiple counties remaining under boil water notices due to potential contamination of water supplies.
Although Isaias has moved north, the threat of life-threatening storm surges persisted for parts of the Florida Panhandle, and heavy rain and potential flooding were forecast across much of the Southeast over the weekend. “Although the center of the storm has moved out of Florida, the threat of flooding remains,” said Governor Ron DeSantis on Saturday. Forecasters warned that heavy rainfall associated with the storm could bring isolated flash flooding and strong wind gusts across the southeastern U.S. A tornado risk also remained for eastern Georgia and the Carolinas.
By early Sunday, more than 389,000 customers across the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama remained without power as remnants of Isaias moved north, where widespread moderate to heavy rainfall was expected across the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic region. “Going into today, we need to remain weather aware,” officials urged. Emergency crews are working to restore power and clear debris, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Residents are advised to stay tuned to local authorities and avoid flooded roads.
As the storm continues its path, communities from Florida to the mid-Atlantic are bracing for further impacts. The combination of saturated ground, high winds, and additional rainfall could exacerbate flooding and prolong power outages. Authorities emphasize the importance of heeding evacuation orders and safety warnings until the all-clear is given. With recovery efforts underway, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and restoring essential services as quickly as possible.
