From Ring to City Hall: David Morales, 28, Becomes Providence’s Youngest Mayor
In a political upset that has captured national attention, David Morales, a 28-year-old Democrat and state representative, has been elected mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, defeating Republican Dave Talan in the November 3 election. Morales secured approximately 81% of the vote compared to Talan’s 17%, a margin of over 20,000 votes. When he takes office in January 2027, Morales will become the youngest mayor in Providence history, according to Rhode Island Current. His victory follows a stunning primary win in September, where he unseated incumbent Mayor Brett Smiley with 45% of the vote in a city dominated by Democrats.
Morales, who is also a professional wrestler portraying a corrupt politician in the ring, leaned into his unconventional background. Critics unsuccessfully tried to use his side-gig against him in the primary, sending out mailers depicting him in his wrestling singlet and claiming he was “all hype, no results.” But Morales’s grassroots campaign, launched in September 2025—a full year before the primary—bet that a people-powered movement could overcome Smiley’s political connections and fundraising advantage. The bet paid off: his promise of “Providence for All” resonated with voters, and his progressive platform, including a policy that developers and landlords fought against, proved popular during the primary. Critics argued the policy wouldn’t lower rents, but voters disagreed.
Morales’s election also raises questions about the future of city leadership. Police Chief Oscar Perez, who was appointed by the incoming administration, has not yet decided whether to stay on. A spokesperson said Perez “appreciates the confidence and support expressed by the incoming administration” but believes it is important to allow the election process to unfold and to understand the new administration’s priorities before making any decisions. Regardless of Perez’s decision, the Police Department remains committed to serving the city through the experience, professionalism, and dedication of its officers.
Morales’s rise from state representative to mayor of Rhode Island’s capital city marks a generational shift in local politics. At 28, he represents a new wave of progressive leaders un
