Federal MP Luke Gosling Charged with Assaulting NT Administrator
In a shocking development, Federal Member for Solomon Luke Gosling has been charged with assaulting Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly. The incident allegedly occurred during the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin on July 18. The administrator, who performs a role similar to a state governor and does not participate in the political process, was reportedly assaulted at the community event.
Northern Territory Police began investigating the matter last week and arrested the 54-year-old Labor MP at his home this morning. Gosling has been charged with two counts of assaulting the Administrator, a specific offence that carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years. The charges highlight the seriousness of the alleged incident, given the administrator’s prominent position in the territory.
In a statement from his office, the Administrator confirmed the alleged assault took place during the festival. The arrest has sent shockwaves through the political community, as Gosling is a sitting federal MP. The charges are particularly notable because they involve an attack on a representative of the Crown, which is considered a grave offence under Northern Territory law.
Interestingly, Gosling himself had previously commented on the importance of the Administrator’s role. In February, he stated, “The Administrator holds an important position in the Northern Territory and that’s what makes this such a bad decision.” The irony of his own alleged actions has not been lost on observers.
