Emergency Crews Brace for Widespread Power Outages, Flooding, and Water Shortages

Post

As severe weather threatens to unleash widespread power outages, flooding, and water shortages, emergency crews are mobilizing to mitigate the impact. In the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation area, authorities have announced that all streetlights in Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur will remain switched off on Tuesday and Wednesday to prevent accidents in waterlogged zones. This precautionary measure underscores the dangers posed by flooding, which can obscure hazards and create electrical risks. Meanwhile, forecasts predict temperatures in the low 20s, but a mix of rain and sleet is expected over the weekend, compounding the challenges for residents and responders alike.

With power cuts likely, it’s crucial to have a plan and supplies ready. Traffic lights will also be out, making driving conditions dangerous. If using a portable generator, only attach equipment directly to the outlets on the generator; do not connect it to your home’s electrical system. Review the generator’s safety instructions before use, and ensure you have carbon monoxide alarms. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or any gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning device inside the home, and keep them away from doors, windows, and vents that let air inside. When power is restored, avoid going near any electrical power lines, as they may still be energized.

Food safety is another critical concern during outages. If the freezer has remained below 40 degrees and there are still ice crystals inside, the food can be refrozen. However, if the power outage is 2 hours or less, the impact may not be very significant. For longer outages, discard perishable items that have been above 40 degrees for more than two hours. Local officials are also urging schools to remain shut and advising office-goers to stay home. “I am feeling so bad for the Pujo pandals as well,” one official said in a television interview, highlighting the cultural and emotional toll of the storm during festival season.

As emergency crews prepare for the worst, residents should stay informed, heed official warnings, and prioritize safety. By taking proactive steps—such as assembling an emergency kit, charging devices, and securing loose outdoor items—communities can better withstand the storm’s impact.
