Desjardins Credit Card Modernization: Codetention Maintained, October Transition Details

Post

Desjardins, Canada’s largest cooperative financial group, is set to take a significant step in October with the modernization of its credit card management system. This transition, while bringing enhanced capabilities, has raised questions among cardholders, particularly regarding codetention—a feature where two individuals share a credit card account. In response to client feedback, Desjardins has confirmed that codetention will be maintained for existing cardholders, ensuring that no changes will occur to their accounts now or in the fall.

Mathieu Staniulis, Vice-President of Products and Solutions at Desjardins, assured La Presse that “the status will be maintained by default, codetentors have no action to take.” This decision comes after careful consideration, as the new system was not initially designed to support codetention. However, after listening to clients, Desjardins prioritized developing the necessary features to preserve this option. “Our priority has been to develop what was needed to maintain codetention accounts,” Staniulis added.

During the transition, cardholders can continue using their credit cards for transactions and payments without interruption. However, a brief maintenance period will be required to ensure a rigorous transfer of activities to the new system. While some functionalities may be temporarily limited during this time, Desjardins has emphasized that the impact will be minimal and that the long-term benefits of the modernization will enhance the overall user experience.

This modernization is part of Desjardins’ broader commitment to innovation and client satisfaction. As the eighth-largest cooperative financial group globally, with assets of $524.3 billion as of March 31, 2026, Desjardins continues to invest in technology to better serve its members. The maintenance of codetention underscores the organization’s dedication to listening to its clients and adapting its services to meet their needs. For more information, cardholders are encouraged to stay informed through official Desjardins communications.
