D-backs Narrow Gap to Dodgers with 5-1 Win Over Padres in Key NL West Clash
The Arizona Diamondbacks kicked off a crucial four-game series against the San Diego Padres with a commanding 5-1 victory at Chase Field on August 3 (Japan time August 4). This win was pivotal for the second-place D-backs, who had fallen as many as 15 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. With the victory, they trimmed that deficit to just nine games, while also extending their lead over the third-place Padres to two games.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, as Padres starter Michael King kept the D-backs’ bats quiet. However, in the fourth inning, Arizona broke through. After Ketel Marte drew a leadoff walk and a one-out single put runners on first and second, Tim Tawa launched a three-run homer to left field on the first pitch he saw, a sinker, giving the D-backs a 3-0 lead.
D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt was outstanding, holding the Padres scoreless through six innings. He allowed just one unearned run in the seventh, thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Nolan Arenado on a Luis Campusano infield single. Pfaadt finished with 5 hits and 1 run (0 earned) over 6 1/3 innings, striking out five.
The D-backs added two more runs in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and third with one out. James McCann delivered an RBI double, and Jorge Barrosa followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1. Closer Brandyn Garcia then shut the door in the ninth with a perfect inning.
On the Padres side, Yuki Matsui pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, entering with one out in the sixth. He struck out two, including top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt, and allowed just one hit. His ERA now stands at 2.00. Despite the loss, the Padres remain just one game behind the D-backs in the division race, making this series even more critical
