Chelsea kicked off their pre-season campaign with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Tuesday. The Blues, under new manager Xabi Alonso, fielded a youthful starting XI in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tosin Adarabioyo and Liam Delap providing the senior experience. The match was a high-energy affair, with Chelsea dominating possession early on but struggling to convert chances. Delap forced a fine save from Wanderers goalkeeper Holmes, while Tosin headed wide from a corner just before half-time.
Alonso introduced several key players in the second half, including Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian, and Levi Colwill, which shifted the momentum. However, it was Western Sydney who struck first, taking a surprise lead. Chelsea responded quickly, with Gittens leveling the score at 3-3 just two minutes after his introduction. Yet, a costly error from Estevao, whose slack pass left youngster Reggie Watson exposed deep in his own half, allowed Wanderers substitute Awan Lual to restore the lead with little over 10 minutes remaining. Chelsea ultimately rallied to secure the win, showcasing both attacking flair and defensive vulnerabilities that Alonso will look to address before the season starts.
The match highlighted Chelsea’s ongoing adjustment to Alonso’s tactics, particularly in pressing and build-up play. The Blues’ missing key players—including Morgan Rogers, Enzo Fernandez, Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, Pedro Neto, Trevoh Chalobah, and Malo Gusto—were notable absentees, giving younger talents a chance to impress. Gittens, in particular, stood out with his pace and directness, though his struggles with Premier League physicality were evident last season. Alonso will be pleased with the attacking intent but will demand better defensive organization as the team prepares for the upcoming campaign.
