In a tightly contested pre-season friendly at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, Chelsea fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Italian giants Juventus. The match, part of Chelsea’s 2026 summer tour, saw a largely quiet game until the 67th minute when Edon Zhegrova produced a spectacular curling effort that proved to be the difference. Despite pushing hard for an equaliser in the remaining minutes, the Blues couldn’t break down a compact Juventus defence, with late opportunities for Estevao Willian and Romeo Lavia going begging.
Chelsea’s pre-season campaign has been a mixed bag so far, with a win against Western Sydney Wanderers and a defeat to Tottenham in Sydney before flying to Hong Kong. Manager Xabi Alonso, preparing his team for the sternest test of the summer, saw his side struggle to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Juventus outfit. The match was also notable for the return of Mykhailo Mudryk, who came off the bench for the final eight minutes—his first appearance since November 2024 after resolving his anti-doping disciplinary proceedings with the Football Association (FA).
Juventus, who remained compact and disciplined throughout, took the lead through Zhegrova’s moment of brilliance. The goal came against the run of play, but it highlighted the clinical edge that the Italian side possessed. Chelsea’s best chances fell to Estevao Willian and Romeo Lavia in the closing stages, but both were unable to convert, leaving the Blues to reflect on a frustrating evening.
Despite the defeat, there were positives for Chelsea, particularly the return of Mudryk and the continued integration of new signings. However, the loss serves as a reminder of the work still needed ahead of the new season. With the tour now concluded, Xabi Alonso’s side will look to regroup and address the issues that were exposed in Hong Kong, as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
