Australia’s 2026 Census: What You Need to Know About the Nation’s Biggest Data Collection
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced that the 2026 Census of Population and Housing will take place on 11 August 2026. As the largest statistical collection undertaken by the ABS, the Census provides rich and valuable insights into the lives of Australians, supporting decision-making across government, business, and community sectors. According to an ABS spokesperson, “It is compulsory for that very good reason, and it’s important that we get a very accurate count of the number of people in Australia.” Participation is mandatory to ensure every resident is reflected, as the data shapes funding, services, and policies for communities nationwide.nnDemographer Liz Allen from the Australian National University’s Centre for Social Policy Research emphasised the Census’s role in providing an “important suite of information” for decision-makers.
