Ancient Mammoth Bones Emerge from Danube’s Record-Low Waters
The Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, is revealing secrets long hidden beneath its waters as it hits record-low levels. Among the discoveries are the remains of a woolly mammoth, an extinct species that roamed the region thousands of years ago. Scientists have been examining the bones, which were first spotted by locals who photographed the remains and sent the images to authorities. According to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), specialists from the Regional History Museum in Ruse identified the bones as belonging to a woolly mammoth, sparking excitement and further investigation.
Krasimir Kirov, curator of the museum’s Nature Department, suggests that this particular stretch of riverbank may act as a natural catch basin, where the Danube’s current has gradually deposited remains of various animals over time. However, he notes that some bones could also belong to animals that once lived in the area. This discovery adds to a growing list of artifacts and relics exposed by the receding waters, including old shipwrecks and even a WWII bomb, highlighting the river’s role as a repository of history.
The low water levels are not just a boon for archaeologists; they pose significant challenges for the region. In Serbia, the record-low Danube has forced a key hydro-electric plant to operate at only 20% of its capacity, impacting energy production. With no significant rainfall forecast, water levels are not expected to rise in the coming days or weeks, prolonging the situation. This environmental phenomenon underscores the delicate balance between human infrastructure and natural cycles, as the river’s ebb reveals both its ancient past and its present-day vulnerabilities.
