A31 New Forest Closure: HGV Fire Causes Major Disruption and Road Damage
The A31 dual carriageway through the New Forest remains closed in both directions this morning following a serious HGV fire that spread to nearby verges and trees. National Highways has confirmed that the road will stay shut until further notice due to significant damage to the road surface and crash barrier caused by the blaze and subsequent oil spillage. With no estimated time for reopening, this closure is causing major headaches for motorists, especially those heading to Dorset and south-west England on this popular tourist route.
Firefighters are still on the scene, working tirelessly to control the heathland fire that has spread from the initial vehicle blaze. A National Highways spokesman stated, ‘Firefighters continue to tackle the fire affecting heathland near the A31 and will remain on site for the foreseeable future. We continue to have a significant presence in the area as crews work to bring the fire under control.’ The severity of the situation was highlighted on Sunday afternoon when hundreds of drivers were left stranded as the fire spread, with emergency services having to devise evacuation plans for those stuck in the area.
The incident has also put a strain on regional resources, with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service declaring a major incident yesterday due to two large woodland fires. This closure is expected to have a knock-on effect on traffic and local businesses, and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra travel time.
