Crete Wildfire Crisis: Devastation, Evacuations, and Regional Concerns Across the Mediterranean
The island of Crete is facing a severe wildfire emergency, with the most critical front in the Rethymno prefecture on the southern coast. Flames have carved a significant corridor through agricultural land, livestock farms, and residential zones, causing power outages and early reports of substantial losses of livestock and equipment. Two firefighters were killed while responding to fires on Crete, while a third died fighting a separate blaze on the Greek mainland near the port town of Gytheio in the Peloponnese. The main blaze began last Wednesday in a pine forest near the village of Saumos, about 25 miles west of Bordeaux, and continues to challenge firefighting efforts.
Travel disruption is a major concern as tourist hotspots including Agia Galini (Crete) and sections of Paros remain under evacuation orders, affecting summer holiday plans for thousands of visitors. The situation underscores the regional concern across the Mediterranean basin, with wildfires also affecting areas in Turkey, where dramatic pictures show fire crews battling blazes in the resort city of Antalya and Mugla province. Regional firefighting chief Marc Vermeulen has stated that teams will still need to spend several days dousing water on remaining flames inside the forest as well as at its edges to avoid reignition.
