Porta Garibaldi Transport Updates: Fire Disrupts Milan’s Key Railway Hub
Milan’s Porta Garibaldi station, one of the most critical interchanges on the railway network serving the Lombard capital, recently faced significant disruptions due to a fire incident. The station, which handles thousands of commuters daily from the Brianza suburbs and beyond, experienced a blaze in a tunnel near platform 20, causing a column of black smoke and leading to severe delays. According to Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), trains accumulated delays of up to 140 minutes, exacerbated by concurrent scheduled renovation works in Florence and damage in Verona.
The fire, which was eventually extinguished, prompted RFI to issue a warning that trains in the Milan node could face delays of up to 60 minutes or route changes. This incident highlighted the vulnerability of the station, which is equipped with numerous tracks and a railway underpass that has previously been closed for maintenance. The disruption was particularly impactful as it coincided with the resumption of Passante Ferroviario services on August 25, following a month-long suspension from late July for track replacement and infrastructure upgrades between Rogoredo and Certosa/Bovisa stations.
The temporary halt of the Passante Ferroviario was necessary for RFI to carry out essential renewal works, including track substitution and structural adjustments. While these upgrades aim to improve long-term reliability, the fire incident underscored the challenges of maintaining smooth operations during such transitions. Commuters faced compounded delays, with the fire adding to the existing disruptions from the planned renovations.
Moving forward, RFI and local authorities are likely to review emergency response protocols to minimize future impacts. For now, travelers are advised to check real-time updates and allow extra time for journeys through Porta Garibaldi. The station remains a vital artery for Milan’s rail network, and efforts to enhance its resilience are ongoing.
