American musical star Deborah Sasson, best known for her iconic role as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, is currently recovering in Germany after a severe car accident in Italy that left her with a broken neck. The 66-year-old soprano was involved in a violent crash that required a dramatic rescue operation. Only upon returning to Germany did the full extent of her injuries become clear. Sasson is now undergoing treatment and rehabilitation, with her condition steadily improving.
Despite the traumatic incident, Sasson’s artistic calendar remains active. She is set to perform on a 15-day cruise from Kiel to Norway aboard the VASCO DA GAMA, departing in November 2026. The cruise will feature Sasson’s extraordinary vocals as a highlight of the ship’s fourth world voyage. Additionally, she will appear in a festive Christmas concert in 2026 alongside Ivan Urwalow and an excellent ensemble, bringing her signature soprano to audiences in Germany.
Sasson’s connection to Germany runs deep. She lived for several years with opera tenor Peter Hofmann at Schloss Schönreuth in the Oberpfalz region, just 35 kilometers from Weiden. For her, performing in the Oberpfalz is more than a guest appearance—it is a return to familiar ground.
